Song Cycles Performance will explore musical theater works which are considered “song cycles,” contemporary shows made up of songs that do not necessarily follow a plot but are written by a singular composer following a centralized theme. Examples of shows include Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown, Myths and Hymns by Adam Guettel, Elegies by William Finn, Edges by Pasek and Paul, and 35mm by Ryan Scott Oliver. With focus on techniques to learning and performing advanced music (absent of reference recordings), students will learn music from these and other song cycles in preparation for a performance on the last day of class.
