Beautiful: The Musical

The Mass Arts Center announces auditions for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. 

Beautiful is the inspiring tale about a girl who became King with a stirring book by the late Oscar and Tony-nominated Douglas McGrath and the music and lyrics of icons Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

Preliminary Auditions:
Sunday May 19, 2024 1:30-4:00pm
Monday May 20, 2024 7:00-9:30pm

Callbacks if necessary:
Tuesday May 21, 2024 starting at 7:00pm

The Mass Arts Center, 888 South Main Street, Mansfield, MA 02048

For preliminary auditions, actors will book a time during a 45 minute slot. Actors should prepare 32-64 bars of a song either from or in the style of the show. Actors will sing then be asked to do cold readings from the script.  

The Mass Arts Center is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. As such, we encourage performers of all races and ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, and abilities to audition. Auditions are open to all performers ages 14 and up.

In order to do this show accurately and honor the recording artists who performed and worked with Carole King, we will be casting a minimum of 8 Black actors, 4 male and 4 female presenting. 

Rehearsals:

Rehearsals will occur primarily on Sunday, Wednesday & Thursday evenings.
Rehearsals will begin the week of 7/14/2024.

Production Dates:

Beautiful will run for three weekends from September 20-October 6, including two Thursday night performances on 9/26 & 10/3.

Character Breakdown: 

Carole King (Female Presenting)
An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured, unassuming and often the peacemaker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music.

Gerry Goffin (Male Presenting)
Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more.

Barry Mann (Male Presenting)
A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. He is good natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious, but likeable.

Cynthia Weil (Female Presenting)
A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart & chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident and sarcastic, she is also extremely likeable.

Don Kirschner (Male Presenting)
An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker.

Genie Klein (Female Presenting)
Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes.
