Jonathan Larson’s RENT is a groundbreaking rock musical that pulses with life, urgency, and heart. Set against the gritty backdrop of New York City’s East Village during the late 1980s and early 1990s, the show captures the spirit of a generation of artists and dreamers who are striving to create a life defined by love, community, and authenticity — even as they grapple with poverty, addiction, and the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic.
Inspired by Puccini’s opera La Bohème, Larson’s modern retelling transforms the classic into a fiercely contemporary musical that speaks to timeless human struggles. The story follows a year in the life of a group of young friends and artists trying to live honestly and creatively while facing seemingly insurmountable challenges. Mark, a filmmaker documenting their lives, and his roommate Roger, a struggling musician with a past marked by tragedy, anchor the ensemble. Their friends — Mimi, a vivacious dancer battling addiction; Tom Collins, a kind-hearted professor; Angel, a radiant drag performer with a generous soul; Maureen, a performance artist with a flair for drama; and Joanne, a brilliant and grounded attorney — form a chosen family bound by love and loyalty.
As the group navigates the highs and lows of life — romance, heartbreak, grief, illness, and personal discovery — they are forced to confront what it truly means to live. With the looming threat of eviction from their former friend-turned-landlord Benny, and the ever-present shadow of AIDS, their bonds are tested. Yet through it all, RENT reminds us that hope and love endure, even in the darkest moments.
At the heart of this production is its electrifying score. Larson’s music blends rock, pop, gospel, and traditional musical theatre into a sound that is both rebellious and deeply emotional. Songs like the iconic “Seasons of Love,” the explosive “La Vie Bohème,” and the moving “Will I?” give voice to the characters’ inner lives and to a generation’s cry for meaning, identity, and connection. The music is raw and real, propelling the story forward with an energy that has captivated audiences around the world.
Since its debut, RENT has been hailed as a cultural phenomenon. It premiered off-Broadway in 1996 and quickly transferred to Broadway, where it won the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It revolutionized the musical theatre landscape, introducing a new generation to the power of musical storytelling rooted in social realism and artistic integrity. Tragically, Jonathan Larson died suddenly the night before its first preview performance, never witnessing the impact his work would have on the world. His vision, however, lives on in every performance of RENT, a show that continues to inspire and resonate with audiences of all ages.
This production will be directed by Vincent Ratsavong, known for his creative, emotionally rich work on past musicals including Bright Star, Amélie, and Urinetown, joijned again by music director Derrick Lacasse. His direction brings renewed depth and humanity to the story, highlighting both its intimate moments and its explosive energy.
More than just a musical, RENT is a celebration of life. It is a tribute to the artists, outsiders, and dreamers who find beauty in imperfection and strength in community. As its characters struggle with real-world hardships, they also discover resilience, redemption, and the power of living in the moment. Their rallying cry — “No day but today” — is a call to all of us to cherish life, speak our truths, and embrace love in all its forms.Don’t miss this bold and moving production of one of Broadway’s most iconic shows. Whether it’s your first time experiencing RENT or your tenth, the message remains the same: live fully, love deeply, and never take a single day for granted.
